People who adore the Chihuahua dog breed naturally want information on the different Chihuahua types. These loveable dogs were “discovered” in Chihuahua, Mexico and were once considered sacred to the Aztec tribes. The name Chihuahua means- dry and sandy place.

The Chihuahua is known as the smallest of the dog breeds, but what many people don‘t realize is there are different types of Chihuahua dogs. They have become quite popular lately and their popularity continues to grow, in part due to their portable size. Do not be mistaken by their tiny size, this little powerhouse has a huge heart!

Chihuahua Types

Chihuahua's have a wide range of colors including fawn, chocolate, cream, silver, blue, and black. Chihuahua's can have appleheads or Deer heads. Applehead Chihuahuas have a very round skull, short snout, and close-set eyes. Deer head Chihuahua's have a longer nose and they often look like a miniature Doberman Pinscher.

The different types of Chihuahua dogs recognized by the American Kennel Club are longhaired or shorthaired. The shorthaired Chihuahua has a smooth coat that seldom sheds. Their tail is sometimes curled, or bent slightly. The longhaired Chihuahua’s coat is soft, with flat or curly hair. The ears are fringed with fur and the tail is long and fluffy.

Many breeders sell Chihuahua's under the terms of 'teacup' or 'mini'. These Chihuahua types are only tricks of the trade. All Chihuahuas are genetically of the toy breed. Due to the desirability of tiny dogs, the practice of breeding to get the smallest sized Chihuahua possible has developed. People are misled to believe ‘pocket size’ Chihuahuas rare and will pay premium prices.

The Chihuahua is listed as the 10th most popular breed in the US. Chihuahuas are an intelligent breed. Standard Chihuahuas weigh six pounds and under. They stand 6-9 inches tall. Chihuahuas may be short in stature but they are very protective of their owners and territory. The tan shorthaired Chihuahua made famous in the Taco Bell commercials is the most popular Chihuahua type.

Chihuahuas are ideal for people living in small apartments. A Chihuahua can live for 16 or more years. Shorthaired Chihuahuas love to burrow under a blanket to keep warm while sleeping. My friend’s Chihuahua fiercely growls at anyone who dares to uncover her.

The Chihuahua is believed to outdate any other breed of dog in the Americas. The theory is that they types of Chihuahua dogs we know today developed through breeding with miniature Chinese dogs brought to the Americas by the Spanish. The slightly larger ancestor of the Chihuahua dates back to the 2nd century BC. It is believed that this early type of Chihuahua was adopted as a symbol of the upper classes.

No matter which of the Chihuahua types you find on your search, make certain not to overlook this loyal and playful breed. Chihuahuas are a devoted companion and a treasured pet. Scoop one up and they will keep you company and entertained for years. Be forewarned- it is difficult to own just one!
