Chihuahuas are popular pets with people who don’t have a lot of space for a dog but still want a cute and loyal pet. It’s their small stature that makes them so attractive, but this is also what makes raising a Chihuahua a bit more challenging than other breeds.

The funny thing about Chihuahuas is that they don’t realize that they are so tiny! They are often called a “big dog in a small dogs body” and they will have no problems challenging the largest dog they come across as they can be quite protective. For this reason, you want to be sure to always keep a close eye on your Chihuahua and never let him roam outside unsupervised.

Tips For Raising A Chihuahua

If you are adopting your Chi as a puppy, you want to be sure to feed him top notch food. Puppies should be fed four small meals a day until three months old; from three months to six months you can reduce that to three meals a day and between six months and a year they can be fed twice a day.

Once your Chihuahua is a year old, feeding him once a day is fine. This dog breed actually prefers several small meals as opposed to one big meal. Some Chihuahuas have a hard time digesting canned food and this might result in diarrhea so hard food might be the way to go with your Chi. One thing about raising a Chihuahua is that they are quite easy to bath and this should be done about once a month. If you give them a bath too often you could strip the natural oils from their coat and this might result in dandruff.

You must take care when bathing your Chihuahua not to get water into their ears. Wet ears can actually result in a nasty infection so you want to keep a close eye on your Chi‘s ears and if he is itching them or they look red, take him to your Veterinarian as soon as possible.

Proper dog training for your Chihuahua is necessary not only to have an obedient dog that is pleasant to be around, but also for his safety. The first thing you need to do is potty train your pup but you eventually want to move on to general obedience training so that your dog will mind you and so that you can call him away from any dangerous situations.

Trimming your Chi’s nails should be a monthly event. You can use cat claw trimmers which are shaped like scissors with a round indent for the claw. It is best to start trimming your dogs nails early-on so that he becomes accustomed to it. This will make it easier on both you and your pet later on. Chihuahuas are prone to weak knees which often occurs as they get older. Keep a close eye on your Chi and if you notice that he has trouble walking, take them to the vet.

An important part of raising a Chihuahua is proper Veterinary care. You must take him for shots and worming as a puppy and then be sure to take him in for checkups as well as cleaning of the ears and teeth and booster shots as recommended by your Vet. Chihuahuas are by nature loyal, gentle and sweet-tempered and they will give a lot of love and affection to you in return for your care. Taking proper care of your Chihuahua will keep him happy and healthy and increase his chances for longevity.
